CHENNAI: Actress Kasthuri Shankar, who was arrested by the Egmore police for making derogatory comments about the Telugu community, was remanded to judicial custody by the Vth Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore on Sunday. Magistrate Ragupathy Raja issued the remand order, which will keep her in custody until November 29. Following the order, Shankar was escorted by police to the Puzhal prison.
Shankar was taken into custody in Hyderabad on Saturday after making controversial remarks about the Telugu-speaking community at a public event in Tamil Nadu. According to an investigation officer, “Kasturi was hiding at film producer Hari Krishnan’s residence in Hyderabad, using his phone to communicate with her friends and lawyer.”
After the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court rejected her anticipatory bail plea, police began searching for her. Shankar had gone missing from her home in Chennai, and her phone was turned off. While on the run, she sought to clarify her statements, claiming they were misinterpreted.
In a recent interview, Shankar made remarks suggesting that Telugu people were descendants of courtesans who served ancient kings. This led to widespread outrage, and multiple complaints were filed against her in Chennai and Madurai. Additionally, she received numerous legal notices at her residence from various parties.
